Opt-in membership is available to businesses that either exist out-with the catchment area of Nairn BID, or whose property’s rateable value lies below the £1000 threshold, but still wish to support the BID and receive most of the benefits that members do. As Nairn BID exists for the improvement of Nairn as a whole then supporting the BID can be a valuable way of saying to your customers that you as a business are contributing to making Nairn a better place.
Opt-in members receive the same benefits as other members, they just don’t have the voting rights that levy area businesses do when it comes to the renewal ballot for the BID. For the five year business plan which outlines the main areas of spending and objectives of Nairn BID, please click here.
They can apply for free stalls at our events and markets, benefit from free marketing and promotion (website listing, social media sharing and member of the month), and attend our meetings, business workshops and networking events.
Nairn BID organises street markets along the High Street several times a year. The BID also runs Taste of Nairn, Wheels of Nairn and the Countdown to Christmas events.
If you think your business would benefit by being part of the BID and you would like to join, please fill in our application form. You can also send us a photograph and listing wording for the VisitNairn website.
Opt-in membership starts from £125 a year. Membership runs for our financial year from 1st October to 30th September. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch – office@nairnconnects.com
This month we feature Ritson Young as our member of the month.
Steven Bain, Director, had a nice chat with Lucy to fill us in on what’s going on and what’s new with their business.

Introduction
Ritsons was formed in 1909 and opened branches along the North East coast including an office at 51/55 High Street, Nairn. 42 years ago, they relocated to the premises at 28 High Street, above the former Rose Brothers shop. The office now occupies the two floors above the Red Cross Shop beside the former Royal Bank of Scotland on the High Street in Nairn.
The Nairn business later became Ritson Young when Senior Director Bill Young branched out on his own in 2007, retaining most of the staff.
Family is a word close to the business’ heart as the staff have been together for such a time, they have watched each other’s families grow up. Ritson Young currently has 8 members of staff.
What’s going on?
This year is a double celebration for the business. They are celebrating 50 years on the High Street and also 4 staff members anniversaries who have spent 20 and 30 years’ service with the firm. Across all staff members, they have over 200 years of loyal service. That’s a great achievement.
Recently the firm held a celebratory lunch which was attended by many retired members of staff who still stay in touch with the business.
Director Steven Bain said: “We have a local and worldwide client base and are very proud that many of the staff here have come through Nairn Academy and stayed with us throughout their careers.”

What’s to come?
“We are continuing to broaden our client base,” said Steven, “Covid proved quite a challenge, for some of our clients, as there became a greater dependency on internet accounting for dealing with income tax and VAT.”
“There are challenges facing tax-payers and smaller and larger businesses in the years to come, when in April 2026 self-assessment tax returns will be required to be prepared quarterly online instead of an annual return which can still be completed in paper format at the moment.”
“It’s a huge change and I’m not sure how many businesses and taxpayers are aware, but we will be there for all our clients to support them through this transition. This transition has already happened with VAT Returns, and it is now compulsory to be submitted digitally. “
“We are proud of our strong local community connections and are keen to continue supporting Nairn based projects including sponsoring local youth and sport.” Nairn based projects including sponsoring local youth and sport.
