Monthly “tidy ups” planned

Nairn BID is taking the cleaning of the town into its own hands and is going to trial carrying out a monthly tidy up of different areas.

BID receives endless feedback from members and residents about the cleanliness of the town’s streets.

We have campaigned on this dirty issue and given feedback to our local councillors including photographic evidence of the mess that occurs.

In December 2024, we met with MP Graham Leadbitter to spell out the problems.

We have previously been promised a “Green Machine” from Highland Council to clean the streets, but as yet, it’s never been seen. Highland Council has maintained the streets are cleaned every day, but we don’t believe this to be true.

So, whilst Nairn BID has previously stated that street cleaning, very much is the remit of Highland Council, we have decided to carry out monthly tidy ups and are encouraging the businesses and community groups to get on board.

Karen Stuart, co-chair of Nairn BID said: “We are really frustrated with the street cleaning situation. We have always pushed back against taking matters into our own hands, but we love our town and since Highland Council do not seem to be taking the matter seriously, we feel we have no choice.

“What we will be doing, is not serious cleaning, but litter picks and general tidy ups. We don’t have the equipment to do what should be getting done by the council, and we will still be lobbying the council to get them to do what they should be doing, but we hope that by getting together with other community groups, we can make a small difference.”

Karen added: “Our plan will also give us another opportunity to engage with the businesses and other organisations and residents in the town.”

The first Nairn BID clean-up will be carried out in collaboration with Green Hive for a litter pick a litter pick and beach clean on Friday, 4th July 2025! The tidy up will start at Seaman’s Hall in Nairn at 10am where the team will head to the High Street to give it some TLC. Afterwards there will be refreshments served in the Seaman’s Hall. At 1pm, we will set off from Seaman’s Hall for a beach clean.
